National Piña Colada Day!

Do “you like Piña Coladas, and getting caught in the rain?” Every year on July 10, our nation celebrates one of the world’s most popular mixed drinks, the Piña Colada! No one really knows where the drink first originated, but the earliest known history states that in the 1800s, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí gave his crew a beverage that contained coconut, pineapple, and white rum in order to boost their morals. Others have stated that it was in 1957 that a San Juan bartender created this mixture of unique flavors of Puerto Rico.

Now, the Piña Colada is known as the official beverage of Puerto Rico. With its widespread popularity today, the Piña Colada is a modern classic enjoyed worldwide.

Nothing beats sitting on the beach drinking this sweet and delicious drink. But even if you aren’t really in a tropical setting or on the beach , this drink is the perfect way to sit back, relax, and enjoy the summer sun. Whatever your plans might be today, you deserve some time to yourself to celebrate this once-a-year holiday. All you need is:

3 oz light rum
3 tbsp coconut cream
3 tbsp crushed pineapples

Then just put all the ingredients into an electric blender with 2 cups of crushed ice, blend at a high speed for a short length of time, and strain into a glass and serve with a straw.

You can even “Escape” with your drink by listening to Rupert Holmes’ Piña Colada Song!
